The whole route has been divided into
36 cycling stages with 7 rest days in Pula, Split,
Dubrovnik, Tirana, Ksamil, Kastraki and Olympia.
The cycling days have mostly the same schedule : a start
early in the morning and cycle the distance at own speed
to the next place. The daily distance depends on the
profile and the locations of suitable accommodation.
It's an average of around 100 kilometres per day.
The whole route follows mainly quiet roads. We have
tried to find an enjoyable combination between the best
scenic roads along the coast, and some challenging
climbs over quiet winding roads a bit more inland.
At a handful of stages you can also choose for stretches
of gravel roads which are passable with a normal road
bike. These gravel sections have less traffic and add to
the adventure. However there is always the option to
take the fully paved route.
Every day you can expect serious climbing with one or
more passes. Some long and gentle, others short and
painfully steep. The average elevation gain is roughly
1.500 metres per day. Granny gears required.
At the start in Ljubljana you get an extensive tour
guide with background information about the route.
A GPS which has the option to upload files is essential
and very helpful to find the correct way without looking
at detailed maps and an overload of instructions. |
