The Simplon Pass
has an elevation of 2.008 meters and connects the
Italian Val d'Ossola
with the Rhône Valley
in the Swiss canton of Valais.
The route was first widely used in the early Middle Ages
as trade route between Italy and France. Napoleon
renewed the road completely so that his artillery could
use it. The current Simplon Pass is one of the best
maintained mountain passes of Europe.
The first rest day is planned in
Visp on the north
side of the Simplon Pass. Visp offers you the
opportunity to visit the traffic free village of
Zermatt by train or
bicycle. Zermatt is situated at the foot of the
Matterhorn, one of
the world's most distinctive mountains. |
