The Col du Grand St.
Bernard, 2.469 meters, connects the Swiss
Val d'Entremont
with the Italian Aosta
Valley.
The col was already used in Roman times as a trade
route. The pass is named after Bernard of Menton who
founded a monastery here in the 11th century. The monks
helped lost travellers in this inhospitable area and
used the famous Saint Bernard dogs to find them.
You continue your route through the Aosta Valley in the
direction of the Mont
Blanc, also known as "La Dame Blanche". With its
4.810 meters is the highest mountain in the Alps and
Western Europe. |
