Description
The epic cols of the Tour de France in the Alps : Col du
Galibier, l'Alpe d'Huez, Col de la Madeleine, Col
d'Izoard. The names sound like a symphony for cycling
enthusiasts who love watching the legendary event in
July. In addition, some less famous, but not less
challenging, climbs like Col de Cayolle, Col du Petit
Saint-Bernard, Col de la Colombière and Cormet de
Roselend. Plus the switchbacks of Montvernier and the
"new" Tour de France climb, the Col de la Loze. What can
we say more...
A lot of famous professionals fought out here heroic
duels in the past. Now it's your turn to test your
cycling skills and write your own cycling history in
this world famous mountainous region with breath-taking
beauty.
Out of Nice you turn directly inland to the quiet
mountains of the Haute Provence and not much later the
Haute Alpes. Magnificent scenery and ideal cols to warm
up. After three days you arrive at one of the highest
towns in Europe, Briançon. The historic
town with impressive fortifications has always been on a
strategic location surrounded by beautiful valleys and
mountain passes. Your strategy in Briançon might be
rest; rest for the upcoming days.
From now on it's serious climbing with almost every day
a col of 2.000 meters or more : Col du Galibier, Col de
la Madeleine, Col de la Loze, Col du Petit Saint-Bernard
and Col du Grand Saint-Bernard. We cross the border with
Italy and later Switzerland, before we return back into
France at Chamonix, the gateway to the
Mont Blanc. The "White Mountain" is the highest peak in
the Alps and Western Europe with an elevation of 4.808
meters. You can take on your rest day the cable car up
to Aiguille du Midi which offers at 3.842 meters - quite
literally - breathtaking panoramic views of the Mont
Blanc Massif and surrounding peaks during the ascent.
Make sure that you change your thin cycling lycra outfit
into a warm winter jacket before you step into one of
the highest cable cars in the world.
After Chamonix we cycle southwards, back to the
Mediterranean via a dozen of other wonderful climbs
including really big ones like the Col de l'Iseran and
Col de la Croix de Fer.
The heart of French cycle tourism may not be missed :
l'Alpe d'Huez. A rest day is planned in
the modern ski resort which also offers wonderful
cycling loops when all snow has melted.
It's still five stages through the majestic Alps
including the highest col of the whole tour; the Col de
la Bonette with 2.802 meters, just two days before the
end.
The 1st edition of "Nice-Mont Blanc-Nice" starts
Saturday June 1st,
2024 in Nice. The finish lies after 20
days, 1.600 kilometres at the place where you started.
The whole route follows paved and relatively quiet
scenic mountain roads. The course varies from serious
hills to long and steep climbs. You are of course
rewarded after each climb with a spectacular descent.
The tour start at the end of spring. Probably you will
get some beautiful sunny days, but keep in mind : the
weather conditions in the Alps can always be unsettled.
The circumstances can become heroic if you reach
altitudes above 2.000 metres.
"Nice-Mont Blanc-Nice" is a physical challenge in a
stunning setting. You don't have to be a famous
professional to get the feeling that you are a rider of
the Tour de France. Climb the legendary cols at your
speed and dream that you are Marco Pantani, Alberto
Contador or Tadej Pogačar.
